Learning to Grow: Farmer Corey Teaches Kids the Basics of Gardening at Horizon Over the Spectrum

At Horizon Over the Spectrum, we believe that learning is most powerful when it’s hands-on, inclusive, and rooted in real-world experiences. During one of our recent Sensory Garden & Healthy Eating sessions, we were excited to welcome Farmer Corey, who spent time with our Pre-K children teaching them the basic principles of gardening in a way that was engaging, accessible, and sensory-friendly.

Farmer Corey introduced the children to foundational gardening concepts such as soil, seeds, sunlight, water, and patience—all through age-appropriate conversation and hands-on exploration. Children were encouraged to touch the soil, observe seeds up close, and learn how plants grow over time. For many of our participants, this gentle, no-pressure exposure created a meaningful opportunity to explore new textures and ideas in a supportive environment.

Our sensory garden sessions are intentionally designed to meet children where they are. Farmer Corey’s visit aligned beautifully with this approach, offering learning through movement, observation, and curiosity rather than expectation. Children were free to participate at their own comfort level—whether that meant digging in the soil, asking questions, or simply watching from nearby.

Moments like these reinforce the importance of community partnerships and experiential learning. By connecting children to gardening and nature in a sensory-informed way, we are helping them build confidence, expand their understanding of healthy food systems, and develop a positive relationship with the environment.

We are grateful to Farmer Corey for sharing knowledge, time, and passion with our families. Experiences like this continue to shape our Sensory Garden & Healthy Eating Program, reminding us that growth—both in the garden and in our children—happens best when nurtured with care.
